Why settle for latex?

October 18, 2016

The topic of latex inkjet printing can be a funny old thing at times. There are many who love their latex printers but there are also those who don’t. Let’s face it, most people who have invested in a latex printer probably made the decision to do so based on environmental concerns (my customers will love me more for having a latex printer over a solvent printer etc.) and they fell for much of the hype that HP fed the market.

HP has unveiled its new HP Latex 300 Printer series, introducing a range of versatility and productivity advancements to the range.

Kent based display printer PressOn has worked with the Flower Council of Holland to create a giant 35 square metre installation described as a “living painting” using digital print and 26,500 real flowers.

East Sussex-based digital print company Elephant Print and Display has invested in an HP Indigo 5000 digital press with white ink. The new machine replaces an older HP Indigo 350 press and as such will provide the firm with a number of benefits, including higher resolution for smaller text and also faster changeovers for jobs and consumables.

HP has given its DesignJet Z-series portfolio of printers a boost with two new models that feature new HP chromatic red ink that the company says enhances the colour gamut and makes them a more attractive option for the production of high-impact point of purchase signs and posters.

Liverpool-based Go Cre8 has invested in an HP PageWide XL5000 printer to create fast, cost-effective posters and increase productivity. The move – the first UK installation for HP – also allows for the firm’s Océ Arizona flatbed printer to be used to concentrate on more profitable work.

FESPA Digital in Amsterdam was big, brassy, and above all the place to get your head around the current trends, innovative products, and more wide format printing and finishing technology than you could shake a stick at. We loved it, as did 16,000 other unique visitors thereby making it the largest FESPA Digital show to date.

HP has continued it aggressive targeting of the graphics market with its 300 series Latex printers with Spandex announcing the addition of the 300 series of printers to its product portfolio, closing the circle on a full range of ink options available to its customers.

The Premier Paper Group is planning to extend the Advocate product range further with the addition of digital sizes for colour laser and HP Indigo presses after purchasing the Advocate product brand from the administrators following the recent administration of Fife-based paper producer, Tullis Russell Papermakers.

Swanline Print, a trade supplier of specialist printed packaging and POS displays, recently invested in two HP Scitex FB10000 Industrial Printers and needed to ensure it had a robust colour management workflow to cope with the diversity of medias they use. A key consideration was the ability to achieve consistent and accurate colours to an industry recognised standard - Fogra 39 - as well as optimising ink consumption levels to ensure its clients receive the highest quality at a competitive rate.

This is very interesting. In the United States Memjet has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Hewlett-Packard Company in the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. The lawsuit alleges infringement of eight Memjet patents related to its page-wide “waterfall” printing technology.

HP continues to push its Latex 300 series wide format printers into the mainstream graphics market with the appointment of a raft of new graphics dealers including Granthams, Graphic Printing Technologies (GPT), and latterly Papergraphics as a HP Gold Graphics Specialist for the Latex 300 series printers.

Resource Digital Graphics is not your standard wide format print company. Founded by brothers Darren and Lance Britnell in 2011, and backed up by a small team of professionals with extensive print industry experience, the company today is ideally suited to producing some of the most demanding and complex print jobs for its long list of customers.

Irish digital print solutions provider McGowans Print has installed an HP Indigo 10000 Digital Press, making the company the first to market with this technology in Ireland.

Mike Horsten Mimaki EuropeIn many a history book we have read the lines ‘The King is Dead, Long Live the King’ – the old king dies and the new king is welcomed and becomes the greatest king. The history and evolution of printing technology and processes could be compared with this premise. In the Solvent printing business this has been happening. The older ink technologies which were smelly and poor quality but seen as wonderful during their time are being replaced with a new generation of inks which are bright, odourless and long lasting. The question is…‘Is Solvent the correct technology for the sign making industry at this moment in time?’
