CREATE Education Project announces the launch of the UK’s first Primary Education 3D Printing Hub

October 25, 2019

The CREATE Education Project helps to bring cutting edge technologies, used in many industries throughout the world into education. To do this, CREATE Education provides 3D printing technology, hardware, software, training and consumables in combination with free resources and open-source platforms to empower teachers and in turn, enables students to develop a skill set which will form part of many 21st Century careers.

At Rolls-Royce, we are committed to ensuring every single child has the opportunity to be excited and inspired by the world of STEM. That’s why we jumped at the chance to partner with CREATE education on this pioneering project."

Paul Broadhead, Head of Community Investment and Education Outreach at Rolls-Royce

Together, they compiled a complete package of technology and support worth thousands of pounds to go to a school completely free of charge, in order to engage pupils, deliver the curriculum and raise attainment within the region where attainment scores are lower than the national average.

The prize included Ultimaker 3D Printers, software, curriculum consultation, curriculum CPD including technical training, plus lifetime curriculum and technical support. The call went out to all schools in the Derby area to put together a pitch outlining why their school should be selected, how the technology would be embraced within the school and used in projects with students and the wider community. They were asked to provide their responses digitally with supporting documentation in a bid to become a centre of excellence for 3D printing in education.

Through this application and selection process, a number of outstanding entries were received by CREATE Education with worthy winners - Wyndham Primary Academy selected as the chosen hub.

Over the past 8 years, Wyndham Primary Academy has gone from being labelled as a bottom 200 school in the country in terms of performance and attainment in 2011, to an Outstanding school by Ofsted in 2014, designated as a Research School for Derby and awarded World Class School status in 2017. In 2019, will become the UK’s first Primary Education 3D printing hub in collaboration with CREATE Education and Rolls-Royce.

The launch day, taking place at Wyndham Primary Academy on Thursday 24 October 2019 will be a celebration of Wyndham’s achievement at becoming the Primary Education 3D Printing Hub and will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, addresses from representatives of Wyndham Primary Academy, Rolls-Royce and The CREATE Education Project.

Following lunch and refreshments, attendees will be invited to take part in 3D printing activities using Ultimaker 3D printers with invitees including runners-up in the competition from Allenton Community Primary School, Gayton Junior School and Richardson Endowed Primary School and Ambassadors from both CREATE Education and Rolls-Royce and dignitaries from industry and the local community.

We were honoured to partner with Rolls-Royce to find a primary school who deserved to be appointed as the UK’s first primary level CREATE Education Hub. The task was more difficult than we first thought, with many schools in the selection process really working hard to engage their pupils often in deprived areas in STEAM subjects. Wyndham was a perfect choice, they share many of our values and have the vision to ensure that through deeper learning all pupils have an equal chance to achieve their dreams."

Michelle Chatterley, Head of CREATE Education

The CREATE Education Project is looking to do further such programmes nationwide to assist and inspire both education and industry, to develop needed skills for the future, whilst addressing educational attainment of Gatsby benchmarks.
