Colin has worked in the printing industry in one way shape or other since he was 16 years old. If you cut the top of his head open it would resemble a stick of Brighton Rock with the words printer going all the way down to his toes. We throw a series of random questions at him and get some random answers in return.

“My favourite business read was ‘What They Don't Teach You At Harvard Business School’ by Mark McCormack. It’s brilliant and is full of simple common sense values. Read it and change the way that you do business with your customers and suppliers.”

“Outside of work I am passionate about making music with my band The Hungry Ghosts.”

“The worst job I ever had was a holiday job in a meat processing factory where I realised there was more to life than this.”

“My one wish is to live long and prosper. Hang on, that’s a quote from a Star Trek movie! No, it’s actually to get on the telly with my band. Sad but true. I’ve already been on the radio so TV is my next calling. There aren’t any music programmes that showcase middle aged wannabe rockers though so I might have to launch one.”

“The car I drive is a lovely old urban junker with 100,000 miles on the clock and I love it. My aim is to get it to 200,000 before I have to buy another. It gets a wash in the spring and one in the summer and a service every year. My kids call it Lady and as long she still starts in the morning and the heater works I shall keep her running.”

“I’m not much of the Robinson Crusoe type so the one item I would have with me on a desert island would be a luxury yacht so I could cruise the island in comfort.”

“Don’t tell my missus but my most prized possession is my car. A good friend said he thought it was my mid life crisis but I said I’ve not even begun to have fun with that prospect just yet!”

“The person I admire the most is my wife Ange. She is my rock and as such keeps my feet on the ground and happy beyond my dreams.”

“If I could be a superhero it would have to be Superman. Not just for the red pants and the blue tights, but because he can fly for free! It would save me a fortune in travel expenses to all the industry exhibitions that take place every year.”

“Everybody has their 15 minutes of fame and mine was back in 1985 when they were filming the Stanley Kubrick hit film Full Metal Jacket on my army barracks. If you look carefully and squint you can see me running about in the background as a real life extra.”

Mimaki scores a crafty goal

News image

With Mimaki announcing the launch of two latex wide format printers and its own LX Ink system it would appear as if Mimaki has seemingly run the length of the field and slotted the ball into the corner of the goal while the keeper was looking the other way. Nobody ...

Free but not cheap

News image

I have only left two companies in the last thirty years and on this occasion it was infinitely more pleasant than the first. For a start, I have been planning my exit from the Danwood Group for the last couple of years, with their blessing and support.  I have been ...

Seismic social media change lies ahead

News image

Conversations with customers and suppliers in the last quarter of 2011 lead me to believe that 2012 could be a year of seismic change in the Industry. The last time this happened was when the internet changed the knowledge model from manufacture and distribution to distribute and then produce locally. Before ...

Deja vue?

News image

I suppose we shouldn’t be shocked when we hear that a major German press manufacturer has filed for administration, given the state of both the European economy and the printing industry, but we are. The news that Man Roland had filed for the German equivalent of Chapter 11 came out of ...

The Pillock Theory

News image

This is a story I have told a few times. It is not mine, but one that was handed down to me many years ago by my old boss. It holds true today as it did then and whenever I tell it, it usually brings a smile of recognition in ...

Learning to value training

News image

My forty year selling career started because an Italian company, Olivetti, invested in training me in the early 70’s. I went from being a bank clerk to an office equipment salesman via a month’s residential course at their Hampshire training centre. Over the next few years, I spent several more ...
