RT @Stefanie_Thiele: #wideformat and #inkjet experts, spread the word about @InPrintLive, the new event for #industrialprinting
A quick one while Stig's away
| 11 January 2012

Here’s a little job I knocked out during the Christmas holidays while the missus was busy with her feet up watching Eastenders and scoffing chocolates. As you can see it was for a printing company, and they weren’t all that keen on having their delivery van off the road for any longer than the days between Christmas and New Year. This meant instead of taking my time and hand cutting, weeding, swearing and masking this little lot, I went for the much faster wide format print and wrap option.
Now I don’t currently have a printer of my own and as such turned to the services of a trade only wide format print company I know that has a handy web2print system. This makes it a doddle for us freelancers to use. Therefore once the artwork files were clipped, set and uploaded to their w2p system and my credit card shredded to bits (not really, these guys are VERY good value) I was ready to go.
What was even better for me is these guys use the HP latex print system and I happen to really like the print quality that the latex ink provides, especially where flat vector colour artwork is concerned. The print duly turned up - bang on time as promised - and before you could watch a Shrek box set it was all over and done with.
The only down side was I had to do it between Christmas and New year and having to wash the bloody thing before I could do
it because looked like a sodding group B rally transit when it turned up, so that cheered me up no end - NOT!
In closing, this all went swimmingly for me but only because I have had a lot of experience in file prep for printing, and you really do need to know what you are doing to avoid wasting time, money and materials, especially if using a web2print enabled printing company. If you get it wrong at the file set up stage I can guarantee that your job will turn into the brown runny stuff quicker than you can say gentleman’s undercarriage.
With this in mind I will be writing a series of future articles covering some of the basics of handling files for wide format printing as well on using the right sort of computer power and software for digital printing. You’d be surprised, but some people still make the mistake of thinking they can print a 1220x1220mm 300dpi photo using an old Dell desktop (other computer manufactures are available) that is still running windows 98. It’d take you a month of Sunday’s to process and would probably catch fire just thinking about it!
