Tower Printing is the first UK printer to invest in the GMG ProductionSuite wide-format colour management and workflow solution. The long-established South East London-based business signed the order at Sign & Digital 2012.
The investment in GMG’s new all-in-one production solution, launched at FESPA Digital last month, is the latest step in Tower’s rapid recent expansion of its wide-format capability. “We seem to be adding a new machine almost every month,” says director Gavin Jones (pictured right along with fellow director Neil Burton on the left). “We are looking at adding a second flat-bed printer shortly and it will join ten other machines: seven HP Designjet Z6100 and Z6200 models, two HP Designjet L25500s, and an Océ Arizona.”
Wide-format print currently accounts for 60% of Tower’s production, and is growing fast with clients that include Estée Lauder, Odeon Cinemas, The Old Vic, and the Bluewater shopping centre. Products cover the spectrum of indoor and outdoor signage and display: POS displays, lightboxes, posters, hoardings, banners and flags.
To produce such a variety of applications, Tower’s wide-format printers use a combination of water-based, UV and latex inks on substrates that include banner stock, paper, cardboard, clear acrylic, PVC and self-adhesive vinyl. “This is where GMG ProductionSuite comes in,” explains Gavin. “The premium brands we work with demand consistent, comparable colour across multiple products and a real mix of media, in a host of formats for viewing at close quarters and long distance. GMG ProductionSuite will deliver standardised colour across all our wide-format machines, both the current line-up and any future investments. GMG has quickly become the de facto colour standard for wide-format work—nothing else we considered came close.”
GMG says its colour management solution means companies working in wide format printing can quickly and efficiently achieve colour results that match prints produced by other printing processes and on different substrates as this simple video will explain.
He adds that a key USP of GMG ProductionSuite is the combination of consistent colour rendering with powerful workflow management. “Its workflow tools will speed production significantly, giving us a further capacity boost from our existing kit. We really like the EcoSave option, which lets us cut back on ink consumption without affecting colour quality and visual impact. Based on our annual ink spend of around £35,000- £45,000, GMG ProductionSuite will pay for itself within 18 months.”
