Postcard from Gerry at Benny Landa’s Drupa

Written by Gerry Mulvaney on 14 May 2012.

When Benny Landa sold Indigo to HP in 2003 he went back to Israel and set up Landa Labs. Printing was the last thing on his mind when he started to research nano technology. The main focus was pharmaceutical and energy, with hair care also on the agenda.

However in the course of his research, Landa discovered that when ink pigments were broken down to nano size, they exhibited different characteristics. They became inert and no longer reacted to UV, heat, light, chemicals or abrasion. They adhere to virtually any surface, coated and uncoated paper, plastics and board. They don't refract light, just reflect it and therefore use a much thinner layer of ink than offset pigments to create the same colour density. So despite vowing not to return to print, he found he had a new technology which when partnered with the offset process now made large format, high speed, digital offset a reality.

Landa nano ink is delivered to customers in a collapsible plastic container and only requires the addition of tap water to activate it - just like a garden grow bag. But best of all, when the ink is all used up, you simply recycle the ink container along with all the plastic coffee cups.
