Patriotic product packaging proofs prove picture perfect

Colour Xtreme Union Jack Kit

Kettering-based packaging design and sourcing specialist New Vision Packaging recently helped Absolute Beauty Solutions fly the flag for temporary hair colour to capitalise on what has been a patriotic summer.

The company produced the packaging for a range of innovative hair colour gift sets - The Colour Xtreme Hair Art range. Each gift set contains three temporary colour spays and a set of stencils based on one of three designs – a Union Jack, a peacock design or a leopard print effect. New Vision handled all elements of the packaging from the design and concept, through to delivery and deployment. This included the packaging artwork, packaging materials, PET stencils, set build and transit testing.

Stephen Shortland, managing director of New Vision Packaging, says: “The client told us their idea and gave us the images they wanted to use. We then converted the Union Jack flag, Peacock Feather and Leopard Print designs into usable stencils, drawn up on a CAD system. Samples of the stencils were made for the client to try out and approve once they were happy that they worked. Once approved, the final stencils were die cut and stripped, using a 240mic PET, resulting in picture perfect proofs.”

The bespoke carton concepts were put together in the New Vision studio. Fitting the carton snugly to the cans so there was minimal movement in transit. The company used the Colour Xtreme logo and photography provided by the client to finalise the completed pack designs. Once all approved by the client, these were printed on a 450 micron folding box board and printed CMYK on a 5 colour litho press with a gloss varnish.

“This kind of approach has a number of advantages,” continues Shortland. “It means that the client only has one company to trade with, cutting down development and production times and facilitating greater speed to shelf. It also means that quality is consistent and costs are more easily controlled. With these kinds of benefits and the current economic instability, you can see why it’s becoming a highly desired way of working.”

If you’re seriously looking to diversify your print business, a visit to FESPA London in just over a week’s time will probably deliver more ‘bang for your buck’ in the current economic climate than a visit to both Ipex and Drupa combined. Why? Because printing today is no longer about...
