Healeys becomes a Carbon Balanced Printer
Healeys Print Group has become a Carbon Balanced Printer through the World Land Trust scheme to compliment other environmental accreditations ISO14001 and FSC.
The WLT scheme saw Healeys’ carbon footprint reduced and then assessed by the Edinburgh Centre of Carbon Management, bringing credibility and integrity in the delivery and consistency to the mapping. In total 258 tonnes of carbon dioxide was identified and this has been offset by the purchase of 21,670m2 of tropical rain forest under imminent threat of deforestation.
Kelly Harris (left), sales and marketing director, says: “When deciding which offsetting scheme to use, The World Land Trust scheme became an obvious choice - it is a registered charity, endorsed by Sir David Attenborough that as a fundamental principle protects fragile ecosystems that also happen to be ideal for carbon capture. In our view this form of offsetting is clearly better than the approach offered by many of the commercial offsetting companies.”
He added, “We do not believe our clients should pay a premium for doing the right thing, indeed if they use our range of house papers there will no premium at all. Every client can use the Carbon Balanced Publication logo alongside other environmental imprints and will be advised what difference their choice has made with a statement showing the area of land purchased and weight of CO2 offset.”
This announcement follows the Heidelberg Speedmaster XL-75.5+L order placed at DRUPA for the first carbon neutral press sold in the UK. The £1m investment was the first carbon neutral press sold into the UK market. At considerable extra expense, the 170 tonnes of CO2 emitted during its manufacture was offset by the planting of 459 trees in a certified scheme inspired by Kyto’s Article 12 Clean Development Protocol.
Philip Dodd, managing director, and an advocate of other environmental technology, says: “We will continue on this path of environmental continuous improvement and as a further indication of our resolve we are committed to achieving the EMAS accreditation as soon as possible.”
